This week’s Merchant Spotlight focuses on Lily Lewellen’s downtown shop, Old Glory. If you’re looking for well done American Civil War uniforms, amongst other things, look no further!

I’ll let Lily continue in her own words:

“I joined Second Life in 2006 and shortly afterward started creating clothing. At first it was just messing around, but then I found focus after I joined a couple of Harry Potter sims. It started out as something personal for myself and then just blossomed into a SL business. As I succeeded in that market, I began to look at other areas I could expand into.

“The inspiration for Civil War uniforms came as I was looking at some of the western sims. My RL husband, Dominic Roffo, saw some of the Civil War outfits that were being offered. Being an expert in that period and the uniforms, he was disappointed in the quality of the clothes available in SL. No one made any that were historically accurate, so we collaborated on making something he would be proud to wear. I enjoyed doing the research, discovering the little details on the vast array of different uniforms and styles - they were not just blue and gray!

“I spent a lot of time learning about them and began to make a series of different types - different ranks, different branches of service. And then I began to look around for a good shop to put them in. We thought a great deal about the name of our shop, too. We wanted something that harkened back to another era, something that reflected the respect we have for those who fought on both sides of the conflict, something that was patriotic, and we settled on "Old Glory."

“It was about that time that I discovered Steelhead and fell in love with the place and the people here. I immediately opened up my first Civil War clothing shop and set up in Steelhead, later moving to Boomtown for a larger space and also incorporating my other shop, Lewellen's Fine Tailoring into it, making Steelhead Boomtown my anchor store in Second Life for both the Harry Potter and Civil War uniforms.

“Most of my clothing is primarily used in role play or has inspired people to start role play, and it makes me very happy to know I could help open new worlds to people.”

Something Goode!

This week’s Merchant Spotlight falls upon the madcap Garth Goode. Located just north of the Town Hall, next to Pearsed & Cut gentlemen’s clothiers, “Goode Inventions” is a shop for the lighthearted, clever, and just plain silly person in all of us (well, I can speak for myself, anyway). I stumbled into this shop back when it was down on the waterfront, and I clearly remember laughing out loud at the “Butt Light”. I mean, everybody has a face light, it’s so passé, but a butt light? But I digress about the Butt Light.

Says Mr. Goode “I opened Goode Inventions about two years ago. It all started when I got the idea to do a Steampunk version of the common Facelight. In this case it's a kind of coal-fired furnace that points at your face. That's the sort of thing I do, twisting modern ideas into Victorian items for (hopefully) humorous effect. Mainly, I'm just trying to entertain people, though I sell some practical items like vehicles, too.”

“I'm happy to be across from the Town Hall because I really depend on foot traffic for business. No one goes searching for a face hugger or Robot Lackey; they have to happen upon something and decide that they just *have* to have it. I've kept my prices low in the hopes that people won't hesitate to indulge themselves.” (His prices really are more than reasonable. Even the most parsimonious of us will find something fun we can’t live without!)

As for the re-location from the waterfront, he says “Another reason I moved to this new location was to get sufficient primmage to support my upstairs

bookshop. I've made coffee-table books from images of old collectable cigarette cards (kind of a precursor to baseball cards, but with a wide variety of topics). A readable book isn't practical, but a picture book works very well!”

“Finally, everyone is invited to visit my home region of Caledon Burroughs. I've filled it with sights to astound and entertain, including the Museum of Unnatural History, laboratories in the sky and under the sea, a space station, and a Mars Landing simulation…all of it suitably Victorian, of course, and almost nothing that can hurt you…much.”

Also highly recommended: the Personal Dirigicycle and the Force Field (with sparky, sizzly effects!). I'll also be trailing my Robot Lackey next time I visit a Science Fiction themed sim.

Interview with Fox Battalion's Spokesperson

Recent unrest in Shanghai has caused quite a stir, so much so that at least one group of individuals have taken it upon themselves to respond in a not un-militant fashion in defense of the common citizen. We reported not long ago on the posting of the mysterious “Fox Battalion” manifesto, and just a few days ago I had the opportunity to interview the very “Lieut. H” signer to that bill. What follows is a transcript (edited for brevity) of our secret meeting. I have attempted to preserve, verbatim, the particular fervor and style of “Lieut. H” in order to convey the sincerity of the topic being discussed:

Miss Xephronia Warbaum: Thank you for your time. Though I must say I find the mask a bit off-putting when conducting a face to “face” interview.

Lt. H: It is necessary, but you are welcome.

Miss X: I can understand how, as a woman especially, you might want to protect your identity! In any case my first question would have to be, ‘Why are you doing this interview, and not the Captain of the Battalion?’

Lt. H: As his right hand, it is my job to answer for him, and he is busy conducting other affairs that are important to the operation of the Battalion.

Miss X: May I inquire as to what those operations might be?

Lt. H : Classified details, I am afraid. I do not want to give away important troop movements.

Miss X: ‘Troop movements’? Interesting. It seems your group is fully active! Well then, can you tell me about the origins of the Fox Battalion?

Lt. H: England. It was started by the Captain when he was fighting for the common lower class person on the streets of London. He was tired of seeing the lower classes being robbed and choked by crimes and miserly ways of the upper classes, so he paid for his old military buddies to help him, and with more and more help, the Battalion was born and gained popularity with the lower classes.

Miss X: So, a bit of a modern day Robin Hood?

Lt. H: Yes, but the thing was he did not want to make a difference in England overall, but he wanted to continue his work there, so he left some men and women there to continue, and took the bulk of the forces here to North America, where there was a lack of justice, or as it was known, ‘Frontier Justice’.

Miss X: Are you telling me that, besides yourself, there are other women serving in the front lines of this organization?

Lt. H: Yes, The Battalion accepts both sexes equally and expects them to serve as equals. There is full equality of all sexes and races in the Battalion.

Miss X: A very modern stance to be sure! Tell me more about why the Battalion came to North America, if you would?

Lt. H: To bring Justice to the lawlessness that was in the western part of this continent, and we started in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Miss X: Why there in particular?

Lt. H: It was important landfall as there is a good sized Aerodrome there for our airships. We discovered a good deal of crime there as well, and we helped the local authorities deal with it with a huge crackdown. In fact we helped take care of a few smugglers about to head to Steelhead before they got started. The local Authorities were so pleased! They welcomed us with openarms.

Miss X: Well, then, I suppose thanks are due to your people for that. It seems you have done some good as Colonel Huddleston has said.

Lt H: We have no reason to lie, as stated in our letter we have done quite a number of good services since our arrival in North America.

Miss X: Do you have other examples of these “good services”?

Lt. H: In Anchorage, Alaska there was an Illegal orphanage being run where children were malnourished, beaten, and used to clean lit chimneys of soot, we rescued those children from the head of the Orphanage, and took them to loving families or welcoming foster homes.

Miss X: What happened to the head of the Orphanage?

Lt. H: We stuffed her up the smallest chimney we could find.

Miss X: Oh. Well. …Where else did you go?

Lt. H: In Juneau, Alaska a madman chemist was poisoning people, filling Whiskey bottles with his poisons. It killed thirteen people and put the town in a state of chaos before we were called in on a contract by the Mayor, who was not sure if we could be trusted. But he had no choice as his lawmen were outnumbered with riots in the streets.

Miss X: Oh my, how did you handle it?

Lt H: We went in, guns blazing in some cases. Final count; we killed 23 people, arrested 40, and found the culprit. He begged for the town’s authority to arrest him as we dragged him away, but they only watched as they had their orders.

Miss X: You did not give him due process? What did you do to him?

Lt H: It was in our contract that we get him, and got him we did. We made him drink his poison drinks, every last drop!

Miss X: How many of these, erm, ‘contracts’ have you fulfilled so far in North America?

Lt. H: So Far, about Five Major and Ten Minor contracts, all successful, all on the West Coast between Anchorage and Steelhead.

Miss X: And with varying degrees of success, if I am to understand various reports correctly, including verbal reports from Col. Huddleston. Some call the Battalion Saints, but others call you Devils. Why do you think that is?

Lt. H: Well, I see that he gets around, to say the least. Yes, there was a minor mission on the United States/Canadian Border where we did use excessive gun play. It was a group of Smugglers who was smuggling Exotic Goods…opium with legal fine China…let's just say the China was not so fine after we were done. Cost several merchants a lot of money, but we got the opium and we did not make money off that operation.

Miss X: I see, so this action was rather less than successful?

Lt. H: It was a success, we achieved the goal of the mission, to find and destroy the drug shipment. We just did not know how it was being shipped, and it was the last time we would be so blind for a mission.

Miss X: Ah, I see. So what was your last operation before arriving in Steelhead?

Lt. H: We were in Seattle. We were hired by some locals who wanted to find their children, their young daughters who up and disappeared with no clues or traces. Our Detective and our troops turned the town upside down. It was a difficult situation as this was the first time we were operating on firm American soil, and the Army was keeping us in check, not sure what to make of us.

Miss X: Well, I suppose they took you as some invading militia, albeit of no apparent government affiliation. How do you make arrangements with local authorities?

Lt. H: The Captain handles meetings with local officials, to make transitions f

or seeing our troops around easier and to make sure there is no problems, but the Mayor of Seattle did not trust us, even with all the glowing letters of recommendation, so he called in the Army to watch us. Too bad they were so busy watching us, they did not see the real problems they had under their noses.

Miss X: And what problem was that?

Lt. H: The Chinese Tong were set up and strong in Seattle, we outfoxed the army and hit their Chinatown to discover they had a slavery ring set up. They were luring young girls with easy job promises, and snap, they would be taken, beaten, some addicted to opium to be used as prostitutes in Chinatown, the rest they sent overseas for profit on the White Slave markets.

Miss X: That is appalling! I trust you stopped them and that they got proper justice in courts for their crimes?

Lt. H: Are you out of your mind! The courts are biased and take forever to do their jobs, not to mention they do not do their jobs properly. No, We got all the evidence and turned it in to the Mayor and law officials so they could deal with the Tong. As for the Slave Ring members, we got them doped up on their own opium, boxed them up in small crates, and shipped them to Hong Kong.

Miss X: That seems a bit barbaric, don’t you think?

Lt. H: That's my point, they are worse than barbarians to do that to children, women, to people period! They deserve no mercy, no respect, no salvation, they deserve to die for the crimes they committed to those people, and that is what the Battalion does; they bring justice to those people who could not fight back, who died, who suffer because they do not have a say in how they have a chance to live. If it means I must give my life to kill people like these to save others who cannot fight back, I would do it over and over again; anyone in the Battalion would do it if it meant one more child could live a full life free from some predator.

Miss X: I see.....Now I have to ask, Why is the Battalion in Steelhead?

Lt. H: We were hired by a Citizen to come to town, secure it from the gang violence and crime that has been plaguing it, and return it to the hands of its law enforcement who is unable to contain the violence.

Miss X: Interesting. I would very much like to talk to this “Citizen” and ask them why they feel Steelhead cannot handle its own business?

Lt. H: I'm afraid that is classified, that is Client privilege information and cannot be revealed.

Miss X: Very well. It seems that the Marshal and his people have the situation well in hand, not to mention that the town has a Militia which is capable of providing assistance as needed, so I wonder just how much an additional vigilante group is needed?

Lt. H: If the situation was so well in hand as you put it, why does the Marshal Ortegavich sit back and let Nuns and hired Jaegers do all the work? Why is he not out in the streets patrolling, looking for crime as we speak, meeting with the people and reassuring them? He’s nothing but a Glory Hound, with the emphasis on Hound, who does nothing but takes credit for others hard work in law enforcement! As for the Militia, with the exceptions of Commandant Caligari, Commodore Peterman, and Colonel Huddleston, the Militia is a poorly trained and equipped group of civilians who do not know what end of a rifle or vehicle from the other, and would not be able to stand against battle harden troops such as ours!

Miss X: You presume to know a great deal about the capabilities of our native forces, Lieutenant. Or is your presumption based on hard intelligence? It almost as though you may have operatives secreted amongst the established Militia. If this is true, even in the name of “justice”, how are we to be sure no sabotage is ultimately intended?

Lt. H: I have not nor have I any reason to lie. All I have said and I will say is the truth! We are not an Evil organization; and if we do our work, gathering intelligence in an area before we move in, trying to get as much detailed information as we can before we move in, and we also get information on our client as well…we will not work for evil people as well! The Battalion works on principals and codes of honor.

Miss X: Some would say twisted codes of honor, and Vigilantism.

Lt. H: That is their opinion, but we do serve the forces of Good.

Miss X: I understand you had a recent setback, involving two of your men?

Lt. H: Yes, two of our troopers (I will not give out their names as that is classified) were brutally murdered by gang members, their throats slit by a blade that was razor sharp, and their bodies thrown into the Harbor. I brought you photos and their autopsies to prove this is not a hoax.

Miss X: Yes, I looked them over. Very disturbing. You say a gang did this?

Lt. H: Yes, they left a message for us, to ‘leave or there will be more dead foxes’. Obviousl we will not go, and will find those who killed our men, and they will pay for this transgression.

Miss X: But won't meeting violence with more violence only inflame the situation?

Lt. H: No. Violence must be dealt with by stalking our prey like the cowards they are now, as they do not have the honor to face us openly. We will hunt them, toy with them, make them suffer…they lost their.....

Miss X: I see your point, and I see there is no reasoning with you at least on the front of mercy. Oddly, it seems that, in the name of opposing “Frontier Justice”, you do little more than dole out more “Frontier Justice”, but perhaps I am overthinking the issue. At any rate, what are the future goals of the Battalion?

Lt. H: Right now I am concentrating on the current goals. While I am privy to future goals I let the Captain deal with them.

Miss X: I understand. Thank you for your time Lieutenant, this has been.....interesting. Please let the Captain know he has my thanks as well. If there are any more questions, I will be in touch.

Lt. H: It has been wonderful. Here, you’re welcome to have a copy of our flag for your paper, we had one made for your printing press.

Merchant Spotlight: Luminous Designs

One of the unique aspects of Steelhead is its abundance of creative individuals. We are blessed to be home to scripters, graphic designers, writers, and other content creators. One of our earliest residents just happens to be a very prolific creator of clothing and furnishings, so we’re kicking off our weekly “merchant spotlight” with…Lumina Elvehjem of Luminous Designs!

Lumi has been with Steelhead from its inception, so she’s pretty much “seen it all”. She styles herself in-world as an “Elven-Neko” mix, so don’t be surprised to see her sporting cat ears and a tail. Loyal to Steelhead through its various incarnations, she’s a valuable asset with her directness, honesty, and playful sense of humor. Although she’s not active in RP, she’s happy to help with design elements.

First coming to Steelhead to help a couple of RL friends, Lumi jumped into the commercial aspects of this virtual world feet first. Helping the sim’s first owners with building, she found she had a natural talent for prim manipulation and designing for SL.

A RL seamstress and designer, she found herself frustrated with “prim only” creating in SL. She acquired a copy of Photoshop, found some tutorials, taught herself how to make clothing, and a premier SL clothing designer was born.

Although Steelhead’s theme has shifted somewhat from strictly “Western” to “Pacific Northwest + Steampunk”, it has not really affected her inventory. “The theme of the sim always was kind of an aside to me anyways”, she says. “I never wore or made western things when it was western, and I had little intension of really adopting ‘steampunk’ as a theme... If you look at my store it is not steampunk at all, or gaslamp or any other theme actually. I’ve had marketing experts look at my store and go ‘yeah... What THEME are you doing here??’ Well, the way I look at it, this is MY second life and I don’t do well in boxes, and so I tend to remain rather un-label-able. What I do is what no one else does, or they didn’t do it well enough for my tastes. The kimono are a perfect example of that. There are tons of kimono in SL, but none like mine, made to be worn, sat in, danced in and enjoyed. And you can get Naughty with them! You don’t need a

special AO to wear them. They come with an underkimono. They are ... Different. Complete…and made with actually using them in mind.”

As to what she’s doing now, she continues “I’ve now been making SL clothing for about 3 years. I find it absolutely liberating to be able to design ANY thing I may desire with no worries about fabric costs, or buttons, or zippers or even FIT! Sometimes it takes a bit of thinking to figure out the best way to make a thing, but I love to think so this is simply more fun to me…and part of why I refuse to adopt a particular theme. I want to be able to make whatever I want and not worry about the labels.”

“I perhaps put a bit more into any particular design then some designers. For example I may upload a top 20 times (THANK YOU TEMPORARY TEXTURES!!!) before accepting it as good, making sure side seams match... wrinkles make sense....that the design on the fabric doesn’t totally warp over breasts or big chests. Most of my designs (especially the more recent ones) are full of what I’ve come to call Unseen Details. These are the things you don’t really see unless they aren’t there. Things like matching seams (don’t they bug you when they aren’t right??) and fixing the alfa glitch in the skirt while keeping it to appear sheer and light. I don’t always succeed and my earlier stuff is less together that way then things I’ve made recently of course, but I’ve always tried for something more than what was normally available...and then I offer it at an affordable price. My things aren’t the cheapest clothing out there for sure... but they aren’t the spendiest either and often are far, far better than the ‘spendy spendy’ things. I know, ‘cuz I get them spendy things often as market research, only to be rather disappointed at the incompleteness of the thing, making me wonder how the price justifies itself. The fact is…sometimes you DON’T get what you pay for. Sometimes It’s simply overpriced.”

Having shopped around myself and marveled at some of the very expensive offerings by other designers, I can attest to everything she’s said above. Another “value added” element to Lumi’s work is that she offers many of the garment pieces on more than one layer, which gives the buyer a great deal of flexibility in how they want to wear the outfit. I’ve learned a lot from Lumi’s work, and you’ll enjoy wearing it!

“Fox Battalion” Leader Speaks

In an apparent attempt at clarification of the mysterious Latin bills posted around town declaring the advent of the vigilante group calling itself the “Fox Battalion”, another missive, this time in English, has been circulating amongst the populace. Claiming to represent the cause of “justice and peace that comes from an orderly society free of crime”, the letter, also signed “The Captain” (of the Fox Battalion) clearly states dissatisfaction with Steelhead’s Law Enforcement Officials. In it the town Marshal is accused of “sitting back and waiting” rather than “doing something” about the recent crime wave in Shanghai and elsewhere.

The Marshal’s office has hardly been idle, despite claims to the contrary. Street patrols by the Jaeger contingent continue around the clock, and Marshal Ortegavitch is actively working specific cases.The Steelhead Militia are doing their part as well, the Navy adding routine patrols to increase the watch on the coastline, and the Land arm on constant alert. Intelligence gathered by Col. Huddleston has proven difficult to obtain. What he has discovered from reliable sources is that the Battalion have a wider reach than previously believed, and “have been active along the West Coast from Anchorage to Seattle”. His sources belie the delicacy declared by the Fox Battalion letters, and although they agree that the Battalion had nothing to do with the Chang matter, they have been “hitting criminals hard, capturing and occasionally killing (them) in the name of bringing them to justice.” He goes on to say that they “go after anyone that does major crimes: Drugs, Smuggling, Slavery, you name it…”. Whether they are considered “saints” or “devils”, he says, depends on which Law Enforcement officials or agencies one speaks to.

The ambiguous “something” the Fox Battalion proposes to do is what worries the aforementioned Marshal and other town officials. This newest missive from the “Captain” purports that the Fox Battalion is not responsible for the recently murdered Mr. Cheng (sic), a known criminal and common thug, and goes on to claim an aversion to violence. Still, the Battalion takes credit for “quelling smuggling and drug operations” (no specifics given) and threatens to take “more of an active role in stopping the vile trades that threaten and choke the good citizens of this city.” One might wonder how this could be accomplished without a modicum of violence that has great potential for escalation.

Felled Foe Found! Latest casualty in Chinatown gang wars?

Early in the morning on Friday the 28^th of January, fishermen dragged a corpse from the oily waters of Shanghai Harbor. The victim has been identified as one “Chang”, a notorious member of the Bing Kong Gang or “Tong” known in Shanghai for its shady and often violent activities. Local residents queried are stunned, as this particular character was infamous for being unusually strong and vicious, and the thought that he could be bested in a fight poses the question of who this new threat, or threats, might be. Unlike the recent spate of grisly beheadings that proved to be the work of a nightmarish creature of the deep, this murder, as it can only be deemed as such, was inflicted by knife wound directly to the heart. Ironically, it appears that the victim’s own blade was the instrument of his death, according to Dr. Rynhold Beck, who was promptly called to the scene as soon as word reached Marshal Ortegavitch. Although nuns from Our Lady of Perpetual Vigilance were dispatched to accompany Dr. Beck to the scene of the crime, once news reached the Marshal of the nature of the situation, the Jaeger Corps were quickly sent to replace them. "I don't wish to involve the nuns in this affair.” says Marshal Ortegavitch. “They may be tough, but it's a very dangerous situation there."

Violence is nothing new amongst the Chinatown gangs, as can be evidenced by the recent bombing of one of the “Dragon Lady’s” round houses, which some say may have been an actual assassination attempt upon this local luminary. While some say she is reaping what she has sown as the leader herself of the Dragon Tong, others decry this as without merit, as her people refrain from violence as a matter of course, and are not the originators of the local unrest. Dr. Beck supports this notion, going as far as to call her organization “honourable”, which is solid praise from someone who is in a position to know of what he speaks. The Bing Kong Tong, to which the unfortunate Chang belonged, is universally considered to be an outright criminal organization, feared by the populace. However, it is rumoured that a third gang has been making its presence known, one even more powerful than the Bing Kong. Says Beck, “From what I understand, this new group are small and had no previous ties to this town - they simply appeared a few months ago and their influence has steadily, silently grown. Whether Chang was killed by one of that group, one of the Dragon Tong or one of the mysterious Fox Battalion (See additional article. Ed.), I just don't know. But what I do know is that with each gang related death, the danger for the innocent people of these streets grows.”

In a not so unusual turn of events, it appears that some locals are actually welcoming the advent of this new Tong, as it may dampen the activities of the hated Bing Kong. Dr. Beck has made inquiries, but says, “It is proving very hard to find people willing to talk - some are scared, others seem to feel a sense of loyalty to this new group. But I hear the leader is a very fierce leader indeed. People around here hate the Bing Kong Tong with a passion that would blind the sun! Anyone who comes along and seems to offer them a way out from under the Bing Kong is going to be hailed as a savior.” Dr. Beck is frank about his appreciation of this sentiment, but still has his reservations. “Chang was a brute of the lowest kind, he terrorized and brutalized these streets. I hope he suffered greatly…but the thought that someone could best him in such a fight worries me…”.

At this time citizens should consider themselves warned about the peril of venturing carelessly into Shangha. The usually questionable safety of the alleys and streets of our Chinatown are most likely a good deal less savory than usual, and extreme caution should be observed, even in broad daylight. While some may consider the 24 hour patrol somewhat alarmist, Ortegavitch stresses that “They (the Jaegers) are making sure this turf war doesn't get out of hand. I put in a lot of work keeping Steelhead safe all these years, I'm not letting it go to waste.” As this case is considered “under investigation”, any and all persons with knowledge that may help the Marshal and the good Doctor with their endeavors are encouraged to come forward. Whence cometh the Fox Battalion?

As some of you may have observed, strange bills have appeared on walls, doors, and windows around town, bearing a series of phrases in unusually cryptic Latin verbage. Sister Arcadia of Our Mother of Perpetual Vigilance was first to spot one of these odd posters, and when more were found brought them to the attention of Marshal Ortegavitch. Upon a rough translation, they appear to be a call to arms on the part of a vigilance group calling itself the “Fox Battalion”, and reads approximately thusly:

Greetings,

We, the repressed and downtrodden members of society call on the name of justice to take up arms to fight back by any means, against the scum and terror who would defile and cause depravity by selling opium and illicit goods, take our families in the dead of night to be sold on the slave markets, bring thugs into our cities to threaten, steal, and kill for their selfish goals. And what is the Military doing about this, The US Navy and coast guard has its hands tied, the English Navy is spread too thin, the US Military and Canadian Mounties are too busy with their own agendas, even the Steelhead Militia force cannot act! That is where we come in, and that is where we ask you, the lawful and honest Individual who wishes to see justice done, come to us, and seek us out if you are interested in joining our cause. Let me be clear, if you are some miscreant, lawless, or have your own agenda, do not bother to apply, for we want loyal, just, honest, law abiding, hard working, and hard fighting individuals, of any sex, species, or race. Break the binds of fear the criminals would shackle us with, and fight for your rights of freedom and justice!

It is signed simply “Lieut. H, Fox Battalion”, with a request for interested parties to contact the signer at a “predetermined location”.

The local Militia leaders seem to be at a loss as to who may be behind this movement. “It seems to be benign”, says local pundit Thadicus Caligari, “and so I don’t think anybody should be alarmed.” As with the case of the murdered gang member, Mr. Chang (see above), any persons with information on this movement to recruit members into what appears to be an organized but unofficial vigilance group should contact the Marshal or myself (Miss. Xephronia Warbaum, Steelhead Sentinel) as soon as possible.

Word has reached our offices that Dr. Ryne Beck, the esteemed physician and scientist invaluable to the authorities in the analysis of recent murder victims and the search for the perpetrator of these (and perhaps other) crimes, may have fallen victim to the diabolical subject of the region-wide hunt.

According to Sheriff Ortega, Dr. Beck was conducting a search for a missing Chinese worker when he failed to report back after more than 24 hours’ time. In the meanwhile, the body of the missing Chinese, a woman, has been found floating in the oily waters off the Shanghai docks (head still attached). Although no official determination has been made, it is rumoured that suicide is suspected. Whether or not the deceased was amongst the number of individuals suffering from the psychical bombardment harassing many of late, sources cannot say at this time.

Patrols continue to search for the ravening creature popularly dubbed “Steal Head”. In addition to our local constabulary, the mysterious “Jaeger” soldiers have, eagerly it seems, joined in the hunt, and air patrols continue under the leadership of a “Q. Projects”. As of this printing, no sign has been found of the good doctor and the worst is feared, as is with the case of Mr. R. Michigan of Port Harbour.

The Plot Thickens...

Early this morning the headless remains of five victims were discovered in five separate districts of Steelhead. Sheriff Ortega declined to make a definitive statement, but he did intimate that there may be a connection between these atrocities and other unsettling incidents which have transpired over the past few weeks. The condition of the bodies may indeed suggest a connection to the recent rash of graffiti, albeit in a foreign tongue, demanding “offer your heads”. Dr. Ryne Beck, researcher, physician and practical surgeon, continues his involvement and aid to local law enforcement.

Shanghai was particularly hard-hit. Near the cannery in Shanghai, early-risers discovered the body of Bill Symonds, erstwhile fisherman and local “salty character”. Not far away, on the very doorstep of Bell’s Poppy Emporium (a purported medicinal herb shop), the body of one Archibald Tome was discovered by the shop’s owner as she opened her doors for business. She knew little of Mr. Tome, other than that he was a quiet man who lived with his mother. She claimed he was a customer in her shop, and no other relation. We can only imagine the shock she suffered upon sight of this ghastly scene! Says Ms. Milneaux, who lives above her shop, “The strange thing is I heard nothing. Normally the ropes on the

flying bridges warn me of the approach of a ‘visitor.’ I heard nothing!” When asked whether local Chinese gangs might be to blame, Dr. Beck, who runs a practice in Shanghai, was quick to quell that rumour, stating “The Tong prefer much nastier ends than this. These souls were killed horribly, but quickly. The Tong take their time…”

In Steelhead proper, the Library gardens in downtown Steelhead was discovered to contain the remains of James McLaughlin; according to Dr. Beck a long time resident of the city and frequenter of the library reading rooms. Last observed stepping out for a pipe, he will be missed most by his fellow academics. The fourth victim, a woman, was found on the very steps of the Steelhead Town Hall. Her dress and headgear, a nun’s wimple, first led investigators to conclude that the unfortunate girl was one of our local cloistered souls. Closer examination led to the discovery that she was not, in fact, an actual nun, but merely a young lady who had been on her way to a fancy dress party the previous evening. Leticia Fowler, daughter of a local shopkeeper, was reported missing by her father to the local constabulary about the time reports of the various victims began arriving at the Sheriff’s offices. Not realizing she’d never arrived at her destination the night before, he was concerned about her absence in the morning.

One of the bodies was not available for examination, but is understood to be under investigation by a Paranormal Investigations team.

Sympathetic Psychical Phenomenon

Also not to be overlooked is the outbreak of thematically-related nightmares disturbing the slumbers of so many denizens of Steelhead and environs.

Dr. Ryne Beck, upon consulting with Frau Lowey, a fellow scientist and psychical researcher, has surmised that the nightmares “were not were not caused by any environmental factor such as a toxin or miasma,” as was conjectured previously “ but rather by a concentrated shockwave of mental energy, most likely caused by the protracted arrival of the monster the local street urchins or “Scamps” have taken to calling ‘Steal Head’.” This appears to be an apt name for the creature, considering the condition of the five corpses, if they can be laid at its doorstep. Says Dr. Beck, “Each death occurred due to sudden decapitation with no other significant physical injuries found. The heads of these poor folk were simply torn, or in some cases bitten right off. None of the heads have, to this date, been recovered. Until we know why the creature takes only the head, may I just add that the popular and somewhat ghoulish public speculation that they are being eaten is extremely unhelpful and distressing to the families of the victims.”

After spending many hours delving into the stacks of the local library and availing himself of the scholarly aid of Miss Riven Homewood, Dr. Beck discovered references in Frome’s “Pizarro’s Legacy – Blood and Gold” detailing Nasca practices of ritual decapitation. Although there are no known South American populations in our area, it is not without interest that Dr. Beck found mention in the above tome of “a God-like creature the Nasca worshipped (or feared, it is unclear) who swam in the sea as a whale but came to the land to gather and collect the heads of his faithful’s enemies (or the faithful themselves, again this is unclear).”

Only one image exists of the creature in the manner of a small carving carried by fishermen for protection. The carving is indicative of the artistic nature of the the Nasca and appears to show a bi-pedal whale-like creature with a human head clutched in its teeth-laden maw.”

With this ancient legend in mind, Dr. Beck recently participated in an undersea expedition to investigate the local submarine fauna. The good Dr. and his fellow aquanauts claim they observed some sort of pelagic, possibly mammalian creature that could fit the description in the Nasca documents. They certainly encountered something hostile, to which Dr. Beck’s current black eye is a testament!

The Dr. insists that there is a high probability that the creature he observed, and which attacked their submersible ship, is akin to the very creature mentioned in the Peruvian texts, stating that “the Nasca language has been lost but one name comes down to us through the ages. It appears this creature, this God-figure, this head-collector had a name and that name was Ya Yiwama, which could be said to mean The Thief of Heads or, as I’m sure you have realized, Steal Head.”

Mere coincidence? Only time, and the events of the near future, will tell.

Mysterious Scrawls Scar Steelhead

As the sun rose this morning over the municipality of Steelhead, denizens of the coastal districts awoke to discover that some person or persons unknown had been creeping through the night, defacing walls, fences, and pavements with abandon. Locations defaced include an alleyway south of the train depot, the east wall of the depot itself, the north wall of the Library, and even the Town Hall!

Those quick to blame the residents of Shanghai should note that this colorful area was not exempt from the black brush, nor, I think, can fingers be pointed at the Scamps, who’s shenanigans are generally of a less destructive nature. The letters appear to have been crudely applied with some kind of brush dipped in a black, tarry substance, and repeat two distinct phrases: “on nadchodzi“ and “oferta swoj glowice“.

Persons on the scene this morning included Dr. Ryne Beck, and Miss. Jenilicious DeCuir, an amateur linguist. Miss Decuir, upon close examination of the writing, declared the words to be Polish, and offered a literal translation of (on nadchodzi) “is coming” and (oferta swoj glowice) “offer your heads”. Dr. Beck, who is currently investigating an outbreak of psychological distress in the local populace involving disturbing dreams, intimated a possible link between his researches and the message of the graffiti. He appeared quite distressed, and feels that, given the nature of the dreams of his patients, that these messages are of a threatening nature.

“There’s really no way to put this delicately,” he said. “Reputable citizens are having reoccurring nightmares about losing their heads. Up until now, I had thought this to be a purely psychical phenomenon…some kind of mass hysteria or hallucination, but now I’m not so sure. At this time I’m willing to hypothesize that some kind of toxic substance may have entered the water or air and is affecting us, but this will bear intensive study.” Dr. Beck is working closely with the Town Council on this matter, and gives his assurance that they will make sure that safe, clean water is available for Steelhead citizenry. The slums of Shanghai, unfortunately, may not be covered, due to a lack of modern plumbing.

As to who might have left these cryptic defacements, Dr. Beck suggested the possibility of a fisherman or merchant sailor. His close examination of the black substance revealed it in fact to be Stockholm tar, a material easily available to seagoing persons. An investigation of all ships currently in port has been suggested, and a message has been sent to the Harbormaster to inquire of any ships carrying Polish crew. When asked his opinion on whether the “artist” might be attempting to warn or threaten, he felt it was too early to speculate. He did say that, given the recent “Creaky Gloom” incident, the people of Steelhead should be on the alert and take care when going abroad. If the “writing on the wall” is to be taken seriously, then something is most certainly afoot.

United States of America (For RP Purposes):
Steelhead is obviously an alternate universe from the RL. We are loosely basing ourselves around the Oregon territories, Steelhead itself was established around 1850's and at the moment we're setting our 'to date' early 1890's. We have integrated Fantasy Steampunk to the Gilded Age of the United States in the Pacific Northwest. Steelhead is officially the 'Oregon Territories' encompassing Washington, Oregon, Northern California and eastward to Idaho, northern Utah and IF lunar wants to go that far out Wyoming.

We fly the American Flag but aside from negotiations and our Alternate Universe we are still not annexed to the US. (For our purposes we will always have this tentative umbrella and open trading with the bigger country but never integrated) The territories became a safe haven for non human creatures which is the main reason negotiations with the US are tentative at best. We'll be adding heavy industry in the near future to Steelhead and that will account for major shipping and trading imports with the bigger country.
We'll be rewriting the history of Steelhead to be a more complete record of the city.

**Kokopelli Stage

In order to create a more integrated border between Shanghai/Steelhead and fix the entrance issue with Shanghai and progress one of our oldest landmarks is going to be coming down. The Kokopelli stage has been around long before Tensai and Lunar came to Steelhead three years ago. It has changed from being a wooden platform to a Art Deco Venetian style build to what it is now created by Lumina Elvehjem.

I want to give a round of 'Hoo's' to Lumina for the maintenance and upkeep of the stage. The Gardens will be cut back but they are staying as part of the ambience. Thank you Lumi.

**The mad mad builders plan of action:

SHANGHAI

The entrances to Shanghai are pretty borked so we'll be working on them extensively, all the walkways/bridges and alot of other things will be replaced redone... tunnels will be more accessible. Lunar's on build streak so he may be a little crazy. Japanese windmills are going to be added into Shanghai... lots and lots of changes will be done, good changes mind you.

PORT HARBOR

This has been on Lunar's list for a very very very long time. The Pier docks are going to be rebuilt entirely, yanked up and replaced. So far no one on the docks needs to move anything but there will be huge changes, we're adding more pier, more industry, cranes to pick up boats and warehouses for shipping industry. Some bridges will be replaced... and of course we'll be putting in the hydro teslatron for those wishing to link up for 'power.'

Mr Huddleston (aka Vulcent Kohime) has offered to volunteer to head Steelhead's air division of our military. Details are still being worked out, but he will be working in conjunction with Mrs P, who is in charge of our seas.

ROLEPLAY IN AND AROUND STEELHEAD

There are several points of interest in the treaties with neighboring lands that everyone should be aware of.

- Canadian Catnip is still illegal. There shall be no smuggling it in through the borders or the underground mines.

- Trade routes are established with the city states of Caledon, New Babbage and Steeltopia. We are allied with Steeltopia and Caledon and under negotiation for alliances with New Babbage and Armada.

- Steeltopian government gives weekly bribes to Steelhead city officals to 'turn the other way' for them to import illegal goods.

These are some insight in the runnings of the government for those who want to create their own storylines or set about their own Role play in the city.

- Results of the Steampunks Against Cancer RFL Poster Design Contest: Thank you to all those who entered the contest. Three winning entries were chosen. In the meeting minutes you'll find the three posters to display about your home, town, or local tavern. - Sky Netizen from New Babbage

- June 26th (Saturday), 1 PM SLT: RFL Charity Auction in New Babbage. Some great names associated with New Babbage have graciously given up their time to produce unique items, or unique variations of times that are sold at their store. Items will be available for viewing around June 20th, give or take a few days, as SL deadlines can be deadly.

- July 10th (Saturday), 1 PM SLT: Kitchen Stadium - War of the Prims with New Babbage! Teams of three from both cities will compete in a one hour build off to create 'dishes' that best encompass Steelhead City and New Babbage. Dishes do not need to be food, they can be anything you believe best represents the city. You will have a set size for the build and a set amount of prims you can use to create them. Lunar and Tenk are hosting and yes they'll be wearing something extremely frilly and ridiculous. So far our team consists of the lovely and dangerous Tensai Hilra, Remington Pinon and we are waiting word for our third entrant.

At the same time we'll be having a photo contest. They are different for both Steelhead and for New Babbage. If you live in New Babbage take a picture looking as clean as you can. Sweep the floor, plant a flower, what ever you can think of, be creative. On the opposite side Steelhead must take photos looking as dirty as they can. Oil some machines, get covered in soot cleaning out your chimney, the possibilities are many. If you are in a lack of ideas, perhaps talk to someone from the other team who is in the predicament. Make a new friend, take a picture in their garden, while they at one in your factory. Reside in both cities, that is not a problem. Enter both, or pick the one you affiliate with more, we will not be limiting here. Winners will receive trophies. Photos must be sent to Rip Wirefly by the weekend of July 4th.

ROLEPLAY IN AND AROUND STEELHEAD

There is a temporary truce between Babbage & Steelhead regarding the capture of Ashiko Kuroe in Steelhead by several mercenaries acting on behalf of Babbage and Armada. Lunar & Byron Wexhome have laid out a series of treaties regarding the events and their repercussions.

If you would like to read over the temporary treaties, they can be seen for public viewing at the New Babbage Ning.

STEELHEAD RELAY FOR LIFE

- Kitchen Stadium between Steelhead and New Babbage, July 10th in Babbage at Kitchen stadium: There will be three contestants from each city. They will be given a 'secret ingredient' prim that must be used in two dishes; one that represents Steelhead and the other of Babbage. Contestants will be given half an hour to create the two dishes. They do not have to be 'food' but small builds that must fit in the space required. Lunar is excluded from participating but Tensai will be one of the contestants.

- For the RFL builders on the Steelhead Team Salmons lot: The build platform has been graciously loaned to us by the Europan Consulate for us to begin building. For our RFL builders Lunar sent landmarks and notecards to the build platform. If someone did not receive that please IM Lunar or Fuzz or Annechen.

STEELHEAD ROLEPLAY

In Steelhead Shanghai Ashiko Kuroe, a notorious suspicious person wanted for several crims committed in New Babbage, was apprehended for said crimes from what has been relayed in a brutal manner. Steelhead will not stand for renegade justice that goes over the heads of our own laws. As we have abided by the laws of Babbage in its juristiction so should they to ours. What should have been done may appear like red tape but it would not have crossed boundaries in such a deceptive manner, Fuzzball Ortega is our sheriff and only he can serve justice. Mr. Kuroe may be a wanted man in Babbage and Armada and only kami knows where else but in Steelhead he was a guest and this looks unfavorably on our city. Dr. Ryne Beck has voiced his concerns, and they are not on deaf ears. We are going to protest this illegal extraditment.

Aoi Matsuri to be Celebrated in Steelhead Shanghai

The Aoi Festival is one of the biggest events on the festival calendar in Japan's ancient capital, Kyoto. The festival was first held during the Heian period (794-1185) when court officials sent a retinue to appease the Kamo deities whom they believed were punishing the people with bad weather and poor crops. The festival came to be known by its present name because the paraders and carriages were decorated with aoi (hollyhock) leaves, which were once believed to provide protection against natural disasters.

Led by an Imperial Messenger on horseback, the procession included over 500 ornately dressed members of the royal court. Regally decorated carriages were pulled by oxen while courtly music and dances were performed along the way as the retinue traveled to the shrine. The procession attracted many onlookers a thousand years ago, and continues to do so today.

Join us in Steelhead Shanghai as we attempt our first virtual recreation of this festival. The procession will be held in-world on Friday, May 14, 2010 at 7:00 PM SLT and all citizens of Steelhead and sister sims are invited to participate in the processional. The script is written by Frau Lowey and me, and the photos and design are provided by Mr PJ Trenton. The main characters are currently in search of a gentlemen who purchased a mysterious book from a bookshop in Steelhead. They arrive in Steelhead Harbour in their airship. We need extras at the Harbour to make it look like a fully working harbor. There will be someone else arriving at the same time - by ship.

We'll be filming at 10am SLT on Sunday 25th. We'll also be filming on Saturday and the following Sunday. But the BIG scene is this Sunday. There may well be other opportunities next month. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask."

Steelhead Citizens gathered Friday night at Town Hall to celebrate the end of tax season. Some wore green, and some wore all they had left after paying taxes.

- Paint The Grid Purple is week of May 1 thru 8. Buildings, trees, grass, objects have been suggested to be painted purple. Unsure if Lunar and Tensai would want their town all purple, but perhaps Steelheaders could wear purple that week. Also, Tensai could probably make it rain purple.

- May 8th, Purple Rain RFL fundraising event at the hotel.

- For volunteers for our campsite building for Relay weekend (July 17th and 18th), Lunar said there were four, Lumi, Elle, Valdyr, and one other he couldn't remember, and Linus had volunteered via the Ning. Those volunteers will be contacted soon so that we can discuss what to do for our campsite build this year.

- The Steampunk Explorers sent this missive to Lunar : "I am the Executive Director of a new group called Steampunk Explorer. We are an open enrollment group dedicated to exactly what the name implies." We are opening offices in Winterfell Laudanum and Caledon Tamrannoch on land donated by our Chairman. The office will be an information center for all interested in the Victorian Steampunk genre. There will not be any items for sale in our offices. We exist as a public service organization. Our plan is to eventually establish other offices in the Steamlands including one in Steelhead."

Shepherd's Pie

A popular dish associated with farm workers of long ago is Shepherd's Pie, and this recipe is the modern interpretation.

12 oz./350 g cold cooked mutton or lamb

FOR THE GOOD BROWN SAUCE:
-1 oz/25 g butter
-1 oz/25 g chopped bacon
-1/2 small onion, peeled and diced
-1/2 stick celery, diced
-1 oz/25 g mushrooms, sliced
-1/2 small carrot, peeled and diced
-1 oz/25 g flour
-3/4 pint/450 ml brown stock or water
-1 small tomato, peeled and de-seeded
-1 bay leaf
-Bunch of sweet herbs
-salt and black pepper

FOR THE TOPPING
-1 lb/450 g potatoes, mashed
-1 egg yold
-a little single cream
-2-4 oz/50-100 g cheese, grated

=Oven: 220 degrees C/450 degrees F/Gas 7

Mince the mutton or lamb and place in a large pie dish. Make the sauce, put the butter in the pan, heat and add the bacon, onion, celery, mushrooms, and carrot. Fry gently until golden brown. Add the flour and cook, stirring all the time, until the flour turns a rich, golden brown. Blend in the stock or water and cook, stirring until the mixture thickens. Add the tomato, bay leaf, and herbs. Cover and simmer for 40 minutes. Strain, adjust the seasoning and pour the sauce over the meat. Stir well.

Top the dish with the mashed potatos, to which an egg yolk and cream have been added. Sprinkle with grated cheese and cook in the oven for 40 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.

From Fuzzball Ortega: "Results for Lunar and Tensai's Designer area application. This year, the design committee made the decision not to do a whole sim for a designer area, instead the decision was for half a sim. Designer area would be one half, campsites will be on the other half, the track will run down the middle. This decision, although quite a bummer, was to hopefully cut down on lag during the big walk on July 17th and 18th.

The design committee came to Steelhead, looked at all the builds that Lunar gave them landmarks to. The last thing they checked out was the Alice In Wonderland set. After being blown away by that particular set, they came to the decision to give Lunar and Tensai a whole sim for their designer area, either a whole sim with a track running down the middle. Or two halves on two separate sims overlapping each other.

With Lunar and Tensai having to work on an entire sim, the Steelhead Salmons are going to need builders for our campsite this year. Anyone interested in helping, let Lunar know, he'll let Fuzzball and Annechen know and they'll make sure their names get put in the designers group for when the sims are opened for building."

By now everyone's noticed the rather unsightly wall across from the hotel. There is a massive rebuilding effort that is currently being done to the buildings that used to be across from the hotel and a few others. The entire square block will be rebuilt, some storefronts will be affected with the change including Peterman LTD., Steadman's Bookshop etc. If you're store is in that area you will be contacted shortly by Lunar.

What we'll be having, a row of brownstone storefronts, better and 'darker' alleys, and elegant buildings that will add to the face of Steelhead.

- Boomtown Residents and Visitors: There have been some changes to the foot of Mt. Hood. If you haven't visited recently, you should make your way over to see the new additions. For mer folk, there will be some collapsed abandoned underwater mines in the river currently being worked on. So far there's only one of them near completion. If you have some ideas, please write them down and toss them Lunar's way to see if we can add it to the scenery.

- Capital City: Shop lots across from the Ballroom have been pulled up and will undergo some changes so please excuse the mess while we're in the process of rebuilding.

“To help fill the first level of the store, I think that the theme of the "Build-Off" should be "Food w/ Kitchen Furniture" (like the soup cupboard that's on sale now). The builds should be quirky, unique, and tongue-in-cheek ... not having food isn't funny, so if you have food, it should make you smile, if nothing else ...”

The Build-Off is scheduled for January 24, 2010 with winners to be announced via IM on January 31, 2010 by 12 pm SLT. The time of the Build-Off on the 24th is from 12 pm to 2 pm SLT. The items will be judged by a panel of three judges and MUST be built during the build-off (although, if you want to start planning and scripting before-hand, good for you ...)."

** STEELHEAD PUBLIC WORKS **

St Helens - St Helens is open to her residents finally. We thank you for your extreme patience, the task was like moving mountains.

The major thing with St Helens is her terraformation. We keep the land locked of terraforming, if you would like to terraform, let Lunar or Tensai know to unlock that. After you're done it will be once again locked unless you ask again. If you'd like help with moving dirt let management know.

Lots were shifted around, things moved and essentially we lost about 6 lots from the original planning. The mountain and that ambiance was the most important thing to keep, the original builds were scaled down, some were omitted altogether but the city is going to remain looking very rustic. Alot of lots were renumbered but if you reserved a lot you stayed in that spot you reserved.

Tensai took a USGS geological survey 3d image and turned it into a .raw file so the mountain is quite true to its RL counterpart.

"I'd like to announce the soft opening of my new art museum. I hope to have a grand opening sometime early next year. You will find several galleries displaying art from around Second Life. This is not intended to be just a shop, but a place where art patrons can learn about the artists, their art and their process. Since all who build in SL are artists, non-traditional arts will be shown as well. This includes furniture, clothing, jewelry, houses, pretty much anything that can be built in SL. Currently, there are no artists showing, just selections from the permanent collection. This will also eventually be a lecture / recital hall. My RL wife will be joining SL to work on telepresence lectures and speaking engagements and she's interested in giving a recital or two (or three). - Repeal Day Building Contest for Das Jaeger Haus - And they’re celebrating by making moonshine!

We Celebrate the Freedom to Celebrate. On 5 December 1933, the United States repealed the Eighteenth Amendment and gave Americans the constitutional ability to consume alcohol. We thought it was a grand excuse for a pub to host a building contest.

The winner of the contest will gain bragging rights, their drink will be served in the pub, and there could be a piece of the action in it for you, if you catch my drift.

Judging will start 5 December 2009 at 5:00 SLT, and the drinks need to be given to Annechen Lowey before 5:00 pm SLT on 4 December 2009.

There are some rules:

1) The serving mechanism (keg, pitcher, tap, chicken, what-have-you) should be less than 10 prims. Single digits, no more than nine.

2) The name of the drink and serving mechanism, the look of the drink and serving mechanism, and the chat of drink and serving mechanism need to comply with TOS.

3) Just in case you do not read the TOS: Do not use obscene or offensive language in the description, chat or name of the drink and serving mechanism. Be clever, not tacky.

4) A Transfer-only copy of the build should be sent to Annechen Lowey at least 24 hours before judging begins on 5 December. The winner will be asked to provide a copy/mod version for the bar installation.

** STEELHEAD CITY STUFF **

- November is Mystery Month in Steelhead City.

- Management and councilors will be setting up several different mysteries for you to solve all over the city. More information to come.

- Management has had to return some items back to landowners because of script times. We do it only when its taking up alot of CPU usage and when no one’s around. So just a heads up there.

- Once a week Tensai will start doing hard restarts. Turning off scripts first and rebooting the sim. We'll try and do this over the weekend at some odd time when no one's around.

- Welcome to Miss LadyDawn Starbrook's storefront in Steelhead Capital City close to Garth's goods. Purveyor of artwork quilts and tables.

- Steelhead Harborside revamping is near completion. A few upgrades to the bigger structures and she'll be done. Residents, thank you for being patient as Lunar has been upgrading the sim. If there are stray prims loose, please let him know. The big bridge will undergo some upgrades and the entrance from Steelhead to Harborside has to be worked on before its done.

- Steelhead Port Harbor residents: The entire pier section will be redone hopefully without having to move anyone’s prims around in an effort to upgrade the city.

- Steelhead Mt St Helens: Lunar will be calling on residents that have been on the waiting list for St. Helens first before opening the sim to prebooking. We'll see the map on the ground in a few days.

- Steelhead Spookiest House winner is Miss Tibouchina Freschi and her haunted house/cemetery and all around spooky place.

- The Case of the Squiddy Thing: A body was fed to the Squiddy Thing located on the property of Doctor Alter's Evil Tiny Kitty Labs last Friday. The identity of the body is unknown. We're not sure how to remove the body from the squiddy thing. Posters depicting an artists rendition of the victim have been distributed. Anyone knowing the identity of the victim should notify Sheriff Fuzzball Ortega.

- Call for Actors and Extras! Mr. Steelcobra Calamari, or "Blue", as he is known in the Orient, has recently opened up an attraction called The Grizzly Mines in Steeltopia. He is very interested in putting together a short promotional video and has asked Hotspur OToole to head it up. H. has storyboarded a short tale of a couple who are lost in a rainstorm and venture into the mines by mistake, only to be chased by assorted ghouls and ghosts. That's where you come in. We will need: A human male, middle aged looking if possible, heavy, if possible, dressed in very retro-looking (read: 40s or 50s) clothing; A human female, middle class,retro style dress from 40s or 50s; Assorted avatars wearing Monster, Ghosts or other pernicious creature AVIs. ** STEELHEAD LIBRARY STUFF **

- The Library has no events this week. The ongoing exhibit about Portland's Chinatown will remain open until about Nov. 1.

- We are looking for people who would like to do a winter holiday exhibit (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hannukah, or other - appropriate to Steelhead's theme and period). Also for people to lead book or movie discussions. Please contact Riven Homewood or CeAire Decosta if you're interested.

** STEELHEAD CITY STUFF **

- Boomtown has been repaved, lighting has been improved, and there are now more ways to enter into the tunnels underground. Tensai will oversee the project to finish the mine work.

- Harborside will be going through some major overhauling next. Repaving has already begun, so please watch your step. The bridges are going to be redone, including the Tacoma Narrows. Management will be returning items off parcel. If there is something you’d like to see added to Harborside, please send your ideas via notecard to Lunar.

- There have been some changes to the Steelhead Covenant agreement, primarily rewording and clarifications. No one has to change anything. It just had to be rewritten.

Each sim has its own notecard with its specific theme and history and sometimes monthly rental depending on locality. Take time to familiarize yourself with your city's history if you're interested in expanding your role play. These notecards will be placed in the Steelhead Embassies, the Steelhead Train Station, and any hubs.

** ROLE PLAY AND PERSONAL CONDUCT **

Steelhead is a themed community with optional light roleplay in the era in which we live (late 1800’s Oregon Territories with heavy Victorian and light clockpunk/Steampunk influences.) We welcome other forms and characters into the community whether it be group or personal. Dragons, Timelords, Girl Geniuses, Fantasy Creatures, Teachers, Lawyers, Librarians...we welcome a variety of different RP communities to Steelhead and offer our community as a platform for them to expand their characters. That being said, we also wish for residents and visitors to respect each other’s character. Please do not force your storyline roleplay on those that do not wish to be involved. - 2nd Annual Spookiest House Contest: We're going to have a competition of the spookiest homes in Steelhead including merchants. Drop a notecard on Dogg Food by Saturday the 24th stating that you're participating. Please include a landmark to your home or storefront. Management will put together a list of the participants. Voting will be held in the Town Hall.

- Haunted Tunnels: There will be a series of haunted tunnels through Boomtown, Steelhead and Shanghai. You'll get lost, you'll get scared...so bring a friend. More information towards the end of the month.

- Vendors Trick or Treat Hunt: We'll be distributing a candy prim to all of the merchants in Steelhead. If they would like to participate, they can hide the candy with a prize somewhere in their store for our trick or treaters. We'll send out more information later.

** STEELHEAD LIBRARY STUFF **

- The Library has no events this week. The ongoing exhibit about Portland's Chinatown will remain open until about Nov. 1.

- We are looking for people who would like to do a winter holiday exhibit (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hannukah, or other - appropriate to Steelhead's theme and period). Also for people to lead book or movie discussions. Please contact Riven Homewood or CeAire Decosta if you're interested.

- Again congratulations to Tanarian Davies for winning the tartan contest. We hope to see some interesting creations now that we have a city tartan *cough kilts *cough Copy of the tartan will be sent with the meeting minutes.

- Ground Textures: In the meeting minutes we're sending you a notecard of the ground texture lists for Steelhead. This winter Tensai will be working on sculpted snow for sidewalks. Please change out your spring gardens as its fall.

- We still have land available in Steelhead, several 512's and smaller lots. I am sending an updated list of all the properties available in Steelhead. Please take time to look if you're interested or to send to someone who is interested in land in Steelhead.

- Manholes in Steelhead
It's been one of the civic projects of Lunar for awhile. The manholes you find are actually teleports down to the tunnel systems below for Steelhead, Boomtown and Shanghai. If you're underground, simply touch the ladder to return to the surface. If you want to go below, touch the manhole covers to go underground and explore. Eladrienne Laval has been creating some unique cover designs that will be unique to each city. So thank you and Kudos to her.

- As Steelhead has gone through changes, the red ballroom, the town hall, the saloon, even the iconic lighthouse landmark prominently featured on our flag has changed. We're making changes to the flag as well to update Steelhead... thank you to Nabila for sewing us a new flag as well.

- Our own Sheriff Ortega wrote an article about Steelhead Shanghai for the most recent issue of the Primgraph Magazine.

** OTHER RANDOM STUFF IN THE STEAMLANDS **

- From Winterfell: Now the BoobieBalls are over for another year. In two days of fund-raising and FAR TOO MUCH FUN, we have raised over 280K lindens or just over $1100.00 USD!!!! Thanks to everyone who contributed!!

The vendors are still in the Winterfell Community center where the events were held. Please go take a look at the wonderful items in the vendors including some gorgeous clothing from Nabila Nadir, and a breast cancer awareness ironclad courtesy of the Boys in the Backroom - Wrath Fleet engineers, MrBunwah Murakami and Justinian Huszar.

- The Limerick Contest will be held Wednesday, October 7th at 6:30pm SLT in Winterfell Anodyne. High above Eva Bellambi's Castle on the Isle of Skye.

There will be 4 contestants in the main event, which shall consist of three rounds. Each round will have a different theme or topic which must somehow be incorporated into the limerick - rather like the secret ingredient.

** LIBRARY EVENTS **

- During September, the Steelhead Public Library will be featuring the Chinese in the 19th century west. A new exhibit on this topic will open next week. On Sept. 20, Elegia Underwood will read original stories and on Sept. 27, Riven Homewood will read from the works for Frank Chin. More details will be available closer to those dates.

- The Wright Brothers & Beyond library exhibit will close Sept. 7. After packing, it will travel to Victoriana for exhibition there. An exhibit from Victoriana about Pre-Raphealite painting will open here in October. Many thanks to Mr. Steadman Kondor for arranging this.

Industrial Expansion Thwarted by Force of Nature

The sudden storm that blew through Steelhead Tuesday has finally abated, scudding northwest and out to sea. Timely warning from the Navy prevented much tragedy, as the population were able to “batten the hatches” well in advance of the strongest winds and heaviest rain. Unfortunately, all the warnings in the world could not prevent Mother Nature from extending her hand against the cause of so much recent foment. Yes, I refer to none other than the Seneca Eastings Gasworks plant, which fell victim to a multi-centenarial sequoia in its last moments of life.

The combination of soaking rain and gusting wind proved, as is often the case in these climes, to be too much for the venerable tree, growing majestically in the garden of City Worthy TotalLunar Eclipse. Oh, that I could have been present, when, sometime in the late afternoon of Tuesday the 18th, this towering giant swooned and gracefully arced earthward…taking most of the gasworks with it in what must have been a cacophonous roar!

Several citizens visited the scene of the disaster after the Town Meeting last night, and were unanimously astounded. Mr. Linus Lacombe was heard to lament sardonically, “Pity...all those bricks had to die to build that monstrosity.” While Mr. Martini Portland praised the sacrificing tree, observing that it had achieved a “direct hit”. “The tree has spoken: loud and clear!” he declared, receiving agreement from the crowd. Sheriff Ortega, when approached for comment, seemed a bit put out, saying, “Now I’ve got all this dynamite and nothing to blow up.”

The plant owner, one K. Frye, has been unavailable for comment, although queried confidants have hinted that she variously “speechless”, “livid” and “determined”. Determined to do what, I might ask?

Back in Steelhead, the Baron Wulfenbach was hardly rendered speechless in the face of disaster. “It seems ironic…the means of its destruction, of course. It does not, however, seemed to have discouraged the folk of New Babbage from what they see as a mission to industrialize other lands.” When asked to clarify this ominous statement, the Baron continued, “Oh, I heard some random comments tonight. Nothing decisive, but decidedly not pessimistic. Just that they (the Babbage Industrialists) had heard about the damage and did not see it as a roadblock.”

Europan Consulate official Miss Annechen Lowey, added, “The largest issue here is that the company is not based here (Steelhead). Not only that, but they could not sell the product locally, as we meet our own needs well enough! This profit-making venture was ill-advised.” The Baron agreed, but warned, “This may not be the end of it.”

Miss Lowey, a dilettante scientist, finally observed, “One hopes the weather will settle now that the particulate load has been restored to previous levels.” A sentiment shared, I’m sure, by many.

Storms both meteorological and civil appear to be rapidly approaching Steelhead and have spread to the metropolis of Babbage. Followers of the late unrest regarding the Seneca Eastings Gasworks plant will be interested to learn of what appears to be retaliatory act of vandalism, this time upon the Steelhead Brewery in New Babbage.

Although city authorities have attempted to stem the tide of agitation, it seems that this war of protest is escalating. The brewery has been closed and boarded up as of this afternoon, but a quick glance through the front entry plainly showed a litter of strewn bottles and skewed advertising art. The outside of the building has been defaced with hastily-scrawled epithets and inflammatory slogans.

Sheriff Ortega (unavailable for comment due to being out of earshot on a rooftop securing a lightning rod) will have his hands full in Steelhead as he attempts to prevent a counter-retaliation by outraged imbibers. Where will it end? Mayhap the citizens of both lands will come to their senses and forego this needless bickering.

As if in sympathy with the surge of anti-industrial sentiment, the weather seems to be taking a turn for the worst. Early this morning a courier arrived at the Sentinel offices with an urgent notice from the Steelhead Naval Observatory (a.k.a. the SNS offices in Pt. Harbor), with the intent to alert the populace of an approaching gale of unseasonal ferocity. A rapidly-falling barometer and winds already approaching Force 5 (Beaufort Scale) are merely portents of what this storm may become. Schools have closed early, and businesses are shuttering their windows. All residents are warned to secure outdoor furniture, lock up livestock, and check their supply of lamp oil and fresh water. Small boats should be pulled up well beyond the high-tide mark, and large boats should lay on extra moorings. Sand bags are advised in low-lying waterfront areas due to storm surge.

Perhaps the silver lining to these ominous clouds is that it may serve to keep agitators and rabble-rousers secured indoors for the nonce.

Orhalla Zander is the founder of the Hobo Junction, formerly known as SecondLife Hobos, and was the Art Director and actor in the movie "Molotov's Dispatches in Search of the Creator" which was filmed entirely within SL. ** STEELHEAD NEWS **

- A big welcome and hearty hoo to Redsonja Congrejo, newest resident in Port Harbor.

- The lighthouse has always been Steelhead's symbol. It even appears on our flag. The Lighthouse that has been on Katt's island is the last piece of Steelhead's past long before Lunar or Tensai. We finally moved on and put down a new lighthouse that captures Steelhead as it is now instead of its past. Please visit the new Lighthouse and marvel at its MASSIVE size.

- Another great landmark is also changed, the Saloon. It's disuse marked the need for change. In its place there will be a theater and three waterfront stores. Until Lunar can get to the building, we'll be setting down one of Lunar's favorite builds that was never used in Steelhead. The Mannheim Water Tower will serve as a small museum until building can get underway.

- Shanghai residents - For those who have reserved lots, please make sure you pay the land fee for your lots or let Lunar know your intentions/situation. For those who haven't paid, the reserved fish will be removed this Friday.

Shanghai is here...touched down in world at midnight August 10th. For now the sim is going through terraformation. It will take approximately two weeks or so before the sim is open to its residents or perhaps sooner. ATM the sim is not open to anyone to drop prims. It's not even in group yet. Please be patient...it has only been three days.

In retaliation to the industrialization known as 'Seneca Eastings Gasworks' someone protested by setting afire some cogs in front of the operations.

Please note that Steelhead will not tolerate vandalism from its residents. Anyone caught vandalizing property will be thrown in the jail....along with Willard the Rat. Friendly protest is acceptable. No chaining yourselves to trees either. The redwoods say your skin makes them itch.

An excerpt from the Steelhead Sentinel: “The Steelhead jail has plenty of room for miscreants and hoodlums intent upon disturbing the peace and besmirching the civilized reputation of our fair city!” quoth Sheriff F. Ortega. This reporter heartily concurs and hopes that this will be the first and last such outburst!”

Furtive Fire Frustrates Frye

Industrialist KL Frye was dismayed to learn today that late last night her “Seneca Eastings Gasworks” plant fell victim to a bit of vandalism. Tragedy (to some) was narrowly averted when alert passers-by Elegia Underwood, Riven Homewood, Maxim Krutschek, and Cdr. N Peterman combined forces to douse a rude collection of mechanical oddments that had been set afire with the use of some kind of oily substance. The first attempts to suppress the miniscule conflagration, blazing on the pavement in front of the main entrance to the mill, merely resulted in an alarming spreading of the flames. When the erstwhile firefighters switched to a few buckets of soil purloined from the nearby park, success was rapidly achieved, and the crackling menace was reduced to a smouldering pile of warped and blackened metal.

When the offending mess had cooled sufficiently to be handled, it will be carted away and attempts to clean the paving stones assayed. Lord Lunar, when addressed for comment, stated that the Leaders of Steelhead do NOT in any way endorse this kind of destructive protest, and wishes it to be known that ways and means of ejecting the offending operation are being devised with great alacrity.

Industrial Invasion Threatens Steelhead Serenity!

August 4, 1889

Last night the streets of Steelhead City rang with shouts of protest as her loyal citizens poured from the Town Hall and paraded to the lately erected Gasworks on the West end of town. Carrying signs reading “No Industry!”, the moderately sized mob agitated on the very steps of the offending edifice, waving their signs and decrying the desecration of ancient conifers that once stood on public land. Yes, the sanctity of the Commons is being violated by interlopers in the form of entrepreneurs from the soot-encrusted metropolis of New Babbage!

The owner of the Seneca Eastings Inc. Gasworks, Miss Kaywinnit Lee Frye (see photo inset), appeared unperturbed by the cries of the offended Steelheaders, and seemed insensible to the reasoning behind the uproar. She seems to see living trees as just “another resource” to exploit, and when advised to harvest trees in Babbage stated that “We don’t (have or) need trees in Babbage….they’re a nice resource here (meaning Steelhead).” Needless to say, this did not placate the small mob, which included such prominent citizens as Manager Lunar Eclipse, Miss Lumina Elvhjem, Mrs. Qinan-Pinion, Eugenia Burton, Cdr. Nadir-Peterman, and even the Baron Wulfenbach! The Baron, Europan Consul General, was hard pressed to keep his Jager Guard under control, and should be applauded for averting bloodshed at the hands of his eager minions, who are loyal to a fault.

One Jobias Barthelmess was also on hand in support of the Gasworks and free-enterprise in general, but his nefarious past dealings with Sheriff Ortega have so coloured the citizenry’s opinion of him that he would do well to keep a low profile. His insinuations that Steelheaders “want to stay in the 19th century” and that the local Law was “lazy” prompted cries of indignation from those present. It seems that Mr. Barthelmess intends a lengthy sojourn in our region, as indicated by his stating “I’m back… You'll be seeing me more in the months to come.” His parting comment, “Your sheriff may not ever return.”, was also ill-spoken, as well as patently ridiculous and needlessly melodramatic.

Tempers ran hot, and more than one protester threatened to use their picket sign as a weapon against the intruding industrialists. The suggestion of Mr. R Pinion, Esq. that Steelhead simply “bury them in paper!!” met with cheers of approval, and was followed by Mrs. Pinion’s declaration that “The pen is mightier than the picket sign!” Even so, tragedy was narrowly averted when Miss Burton attempted to throw herself bodily into the saw mill! Fortunately, Miss Frye’s safety measures seem to be adequate to the task: for now. That Steelhead’s legal minds are keeping a weather eye on this aspect in particular the reader can be assured!

Manager Eclipse eventually calmed the masses and requested that the crowd disperse. One of the last people to leave the scene was Cdr. Peterman (SNS) who attempted to soothe the remaining die-hards with the assurance that “one skirmish is not the entire war!” Indeed, tomorrow is another day, and time will tell whether or not this unwelcome addition to Steelhead’s once pristine skyline will endure. One hopes that the smoke of so-called “industry” will not be replaced with the smoke of wanton demolition, but the fact remains that Steelhead’s constabulary cannot be everywhere at once, and populace seems to feel threatened enough to resort to drastic measures.
